Millions of older people across England can now get vital protection against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common but potentially serious virus that can cause lung infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

The NHS has expanded its RSV vaccination programme to include all adults aged 80 and over, as well as everyone living in a care home for older adults – making around 3 million more people eligible.
Although RSV often causes mild symptoms, it can be dangerous for older adults, particularly those with existing lung or long‑term health conditions.
Each year, RSV leads to around 9,000 hospital admissions among people aged over 75 in the UK, however, just one dose of the vaccine can offer protection for several years, reducing the risk of hospitalisation by around 75%.
The vaccine is available through GP practices, care home staff, and some community pharmacies. People aged 75–79 remain eligible if they have not yet been vaccinated, and the RSV vaccine continues to be offered to pregnant women from 28 weeks to help protect newborn babies.
Health leaders are urging everyone who is eligible to come forward when invited, highlighting that vaccination not only protects individuals from serious illness but also helps ease pressure on the NHS year‑round.
