NHS Protects Thousands of Rough Sleepers Ahead of Winter with Vital Vaccines

As winter approaches, the NHS is taking important action to protect some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

A new national programme will offer free flu and pneumococcal vaccinations to people experiencing homelessness, including those sleeping rough and those using hostels and night shelters.
The initiative will see NHS teams working alongside charities to deliver vaccinations through outreach services, pop-up clinics and mobile vaccination units. These services are designed to reach people where they are, helping overcome barriers that can make it difficult to access healthcare.
People experiencing homelessness are at greater risk from winter illnesses due to factors such as exposure to the elements, underlying health conditions, poor nutrition and limited access to healthcare. By offering timely vaccinations, the NHS aims to reduce serious illness, prevent avoidable hospital admissions and ease pressure on health services during the winter months.
The programme also highlights the importance of inclusive healthcare, ensuring that everyone can access support when they need it. Alongside vaccinations, some areas will provide additional services such as health checks, cancer screening, mental health support and other wellbeing services.
This initiative is a reminder that protecting public health means reaching everyone, especially those most at risk. As winter demand begins to rise, these proactive measures could make a significant difference to both individual lives and the wider healthcare system
