Great Western Hospital's New £33.5 Million Emergency Department Officially Opens

The new Emergency Department features a 60 percent larger footprint, ensuring it can accommodate the rising demand for emergency services, and is now fully operational, with ambulances transporting patients to the facility, and walk-in patients being triaged via the Urgent Treatment Centre.

Key improvements include an increase in ‘majors cubicles’ from 12 to 16, allowing for enhanced privacy with the addition of glass doors and personal environmental controls, such as dimmable lighting, and for those in critical or life-threatening conditions, the number of resuscitation cubicles has increased from four to seven, including a resus bay dedicated to children.

In addition, the department also offers a secluded space for patients in mental health crises, a more comfortable observation area, and two relatives’ rooms away from the hustle and bustle of the main department.
