NHS England has issued guidance outlining 10 principles for the care of autistic individuals in mental health settings.
Emphasising the increasing number of adults diagnosed with autism using mental health services, the guidance urges services to be:
accessible and acceptable
support meaningful activities
provide timely access to autism assessments
base interventions on evidence
manage risk proportionately
minimize restrictive practices
support smooth transitions
consider physical health needs
Integrated care boards are directed to
develop local commissioning strategies
maintain a well-trained workforce to ensure tailored mental health provision for autistic adults.
