Emphasising the increasing number of adults diagnosed with autism using mental health services, the guidance urges services to be:

  • accessible and acceptable

  • support meaningful activities

  • provide timely access to autism assessments

  • base interventions on evidence

  • manage risk proportionately

  • minimize restrictive practices

  • support smooth transitions

  • consider physical health needs

Integrated care boards are directed to

  • develop local commissioning strategies

  • maintain a well-trained workforce to ensure tailored mental health provision for autistic adults.
