How You Can Help Save Lives
The NHS is currently facing critically low blood stocks, with some types nearing emergency levels. Alongside this, there's a growing need for plasma donations, which are vital for producing life-saving medicines.
🚨 Blood Types in Urgent Demand
Hospitals across the UK are calling for donors of specific blood types due to high demand and low supply:
O negative – the universal blood type used in emergencies
B negative – rare and in short supply
Ro subtype – essential for treating sickle cell disease, especially needed from Black heritage donors
These blood types are crucial for surgeries, trauma care, and patients with chronic conditions like sickle cell, thalassemia, and cancer.

💛 Why Plasma Matters
Plasma is the yellowish liquid part of your blood, rich in antibodies. It’s used to create immunoglobulin medicines that help treat over 50 conditions, including:
Immune deficiencies
Genetic disorders
Liver disease
Kidney failure
Severe burns and sepsis
More than 17,000 people in England rely on plasma-derived medicines each year. [nhsbt.nhs.uk]
