The NHS has introduced updates to the GP contract for 2025/26, designed to make general practice more patient-focused and efficient.

One of the key changes is the introduction of new advice and guidance services, helping more care to be delivered in the community instead of hospitals.
A big emphasis is being placed on cutting back on unnecessary red tape. Outdated performance measures have been removed, and resources shifted towards prevention work, especially around tackling heart disease and stroke, which should free up GPs to focus more on patient care rather than paperwork.
The changes also build on improving access, with GP practices encouraged to support patients based on their individual needs. The overall aim is to make services more responsive and ensure people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
