The NHS has announced a new set of 8 minimum standards for patient experience aimed at improving how patients access and interact with planned healthcare services. The changes are designed to reduce uncertainty, improve communication, and make the NHS easier to navigate.

NHS Chief Executive Sir Jim Mackey described the current experience for many patients as "like walking through treacle" and said the new standards will help deliver a more transparent and patient-centred service.

Key Changes

  • Minimum 3 weeks' notice for all new planned medical appointments wherever possible.

  • Patients will receive confirmation when their referral has been accepted and they have joined a waiting list.

  • Updates will be delivered through the NHS App, with alternatives including letters, texts, and phone calls.

  • Patients on waiting lists will receive regular updates at least every 12 weeks.

  • Communications will include advice on managing conditions while waiting and guidance on what to do if symptoms worsen.

  • If an appointment is cancelled or needs rescheduling, patients should receive a new appointment invitation within 28 days.

  • Better communication at the end of treatment, including clear information about follow-up care and Patient Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) arrangements.

  • NHS trusts will publish annual reports on their performance against the new standards.

The initiative is part of a wider NHS programme to improve patient experience, reduce waiting times, and support future plans such as a Single Patient Record.
